Tychr’s complete guide to Big Ten universities — member schools, admissions requirements, academic strengths, and how to build a competitive application as an international student.

The Big Ten Academic Alliance (formerly the Committee on Institutional Cooperation) is a consortium of major research universities originally affiliated with the Big Ten athletic conference. Today, it extends beyond the original athletic membership and includes some of the most research-productive universities in the world.

Note: Big Ten membership is expanding. Northwestern, UCLA, USC, and Washington University are among newer members. Acceptance rates approximate.
Big Ten schools span an enormous range of selectivity — from Northwestern and UCLA (7–9% acceptance rates comparable to Ivy League schools) to Indiana and Iowa (80%+ acceptance rates for most applicants). Understanding where each school sits on this spectrum is fundamental to building a realistic application plan.

The strategic implication: A student’s Big Ten school list should be built around programme-specific competitiveness, not overall acceptance rates. The Computer Science programme at UIUC is as selective as many Ivy League schools. The business programme at Indiana’s Kelley School is among the most respected in the US and increasingly selective.
Research access: Big Ten schools are R1 research institutions — undergraduate students have meaningful access to research opportunities, particularly at schools like Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Maryland where undergraduate research fellowships are actively promoted.

The key insight: For STEM applicants specifically, UIUC’s CS and Engineering programmes are as competitive as many Ivy League schools in practice. Don’t treat any Big Ten STEM application as a guaranteed safety.

English proficiency: All Big Ten schools require TOEFL or IELTS for international students whose primary language of instruction is not English.
Big Ten public universities charge higher tuition for out-of-state (including international) students than in-state students. This can make total costs comparable to some private universities. However, several Big Ten schools offer merit scholarships to international students, particularly strong at University of Michigan, UIUC, and University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Big Ten schools have among the largest international student populations of any US universities. UIUC has a particularly large Indian and Chinese international student community. Michigan is a destination for international students across engineering, business, and sciences.
All Big Ten schools have well-developed international student offices with F-1 visa support, OPT guidance, and career services specifically for international students.
For students who graduate from Big Ten STEM programmes (engineering, CS, sciences), STEM OPT provides up to 3 years of US work authorisation — a significant advantage for international students seeking US employment.
Big Ten public universities generally offer less institutional need-based aid to international students than private universities. However, merit scholarship programmes and external scholarship opportunities make several Big Ten schools genuinely affordable for competitive international applicants.

The University Honors Scholarship and departmental scholarships are available to international students. Merit awards are competitive — strong academic performance and application are required.
Chancellor’s and Provost’s Scholarships available to international applicants with exceptional academic credentials. Engineering and CS departmental scholarships also available.
Several merit-based scholarships available to international students through the Office of International Student Services.
Private or well-endowed schools offer more substantial need-based and merit aid programmes — Northwestern and WashU in particular meet demonstrated financial need for admitted students.
Approximate figures — verify directly with each institution’s financial aid office.

The Big Ten’s greatest academic strengths lie in engineering, computer science, business, and the sciences — fields where several member institutions genuinely compete with the most selective universities in the world.

Big Ten campuses vary enormously — from UIUC’s self-contained college-town environment to UCLA’s sprawling Los Angeles campus to Northwestern’s lakeside suburban setting. Here’s what matters when assessing campus fit.
UCLA and USC are embedded in Los Angeles — students have full city access but campus life competes with the surrounding city. UIUC and Wisconsin-Madison are classic college towns, the university is the centre of life in those communities. Michigan, Ohio State, and Penn State fall in between, smaller cities that revolve significantly around the university.
Ohio State, Penn State, and UIUC enrol over 40,000 students, creating large, diverse communities but sometimes impersonal classroom environments, particularly in first and second year. Northwestern and WashU are smaller private universities (~8,000–15,000 undergrads) with class sizes and faculty access comparable to elite private institutions.
Most Big Ten schools require first-year students to live on campus. Michigan, Wisconsin, and UIUC have strong residential community programmes. Upper-class housing varies — some students live in off-campus apartments in the surrounding college town, which can be a richer social experience than on-campus housing at large state universities.
Big Ten athletic culture — football Saturdays in particular — is a defining feature of campus life at Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State, and Wisconsin. For students who value the energy of a major athletic programme, this is a genuine quality-of-life element. For students who aren’t interested, it’s background noise at most.

Michigan vs. Ohio State is one of the most celebrated rivalries in American sports. Home football games at Michigan Stadium (capacity 107,000, the largest in the US) are communal events that define the campus calendar in ways unmatched at most universities. Penn State’s Beaver Stadium, Ohio State’s Ohio Stadium, and Wisconsin’s Camp Randall are similarly central to campus life.
The Big Ten athletic culture can be a genuine discovery — American college sports are unlike anything in most other countries. Many international students find it one of the most engaging aspects of the Big Ten campus experience. The social integration that happens around athletic events can accelerate community-building in a way that smaller, less sports-focused campuses don’t offer.
Beyond varsity athletics, Big Ten schools have extensive club and intramural sports programmes — one of the more accessible ways for students (including international students) to build community quickly.
Big Ten schools typically have hundreds of registered student organisations — cultural organisations, professional societies, political groups, arts groups, religious communities, and more. The scale of the campus creates community for almost every interest.
Big Ten graduates are competitive for elite employers, particularly in STEM fields where Big Ten engineering and CS programmes have exceptional employer recognition.
Michigan Ross is a significant pipeline to investment banking and consulting, recruiting from Goldman Sachs, McKinsey, Bain, and BCG. Northwestern Kellogg (MBA primarily) is an M7 school. Indiana Kelley is among the strongest undergrad business programmes for consulting and corporate finance recruiting.
UIUC is one of the top recruiting targets for Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta for engineering and CS roles — comparable to MIT and Stanford in many hiring programmes. Michigan, UCLA, and Maryland also have strong CS recruiting pipelines.
Michigan Medical School, Northwestern Feinberg, Minnesota Medical School, and Iowa Carver College of Medicine are all strong pathways to residencies at top hospital systems.
Big Ten alumni networks are large — Michigan alone has 650,000+ living alumni globally. The density of Michigan and UIUC alumni in technology and engineering is particularly notable. Indiana Kelley alumni are unusually engaged for a mid-sized school; the Kelley alumni network in finance and consumer companies is strong.
Unlike the Ivy League (where supplemental essays are extensive and highly school-specific), most Big Ten public universities use relatively straightforward applications — the Coalition App, Common App, or their own portals, with fewer demanding supplementals. This makes applying to multiple Big Ten schools more feasible than applying to multiple Ivy League schools simultaneously. However, “more feasible” doesn’t mean “without strategy.”

Apply to specific programmes within Big Ten schools, not to the university generally. Michigan Engineering and Michigan LSA (Literature, Science and the Arts) are different schools with different admissions processes. UIUC CS and UIUC General Engineering have different acceptance rates and different supplemental questions.
A typical Big Ten-focused school list for an international STEM applicant might include:
Most Big Ten schools have November 1 (Early Action, non-binding) and January 1–15 (Regular Decision) deadlines. EA is almost always worth applying — it signals interest and often gets faster consideration.
Tychr has supported students to acceptances at Big Ten institutions across engineering, computer science, business, medicine pre-track, and the liberal arts.

In terms of employer recognition at major tech companies (Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Meta), UIUC CS is genuinely comparable to MIT and Stanford, and consistently appears on the same campus recruiting lists. For research careers, MIT and Stanford have stronger research cultures, but for industry employment UIUC CS is exceptional.
For many disciplines — particularly Engineering, Business (Ross), and the social sciences — Michigan is competitive with Ivy League schools in academic quality, research access, and career outcomes. Campus culture and alumni network differ, but the educational quality is genuinely elite, at significantly lower cost for families without need-based aid eligibility.
Public Big Ten schools offer limited need-based aid to international students, but merit scholarships are available at Michigan, UIUC, Wisconsin and others. Private Big Ten members (Northwestern, USC, WashU) offer more substantial aid programmes.
Both are University of California campuses using the same UC Application portal. UCLA is in Los Angeles; Berkeley is in the Bay Area and is the traditional UC flagship, particularly strong in sciences, engineering, and economics. UCLA has strength in film, business, and medical sciences. Both are highly selective for out-of-state and international applicants (~9–14% acceptance rate).
